Have you ever wondered what “style” really means? It’s hard to define, but when we see a person with style, we can recognize it immediately. People with style somehow manage to use the clothes they wear to bring out their true identity. If you’ve had compliments on what you wear, such as “Oh, that’s so you!”, then you probably have a good idea of what your personal style is. Hopefully, you get those compliments every day!
I spent two days with style guru Alyce Parsons, the image industry style pioneer. Having devoted over 10 years of my professional life to the image consulting world, I recently began to feel dissatisfied with the skin-deep image consulting work of colors, body lines, wardrobe management, etc.
The Universal Style System provides a first step to integrating the inner essence of an individual into the outer expression of the clothes he/she wears. In the Universal Style System, there are 7 unique styles tied to 7 groups of words that describe an individual. The clearer you are of your core values, the more demonstrative and confident you will be with your clothing choices.
Here are a few ways you can start this journey of discovering your own unique style.
Authentic dressing is all about allowing your inner core values to converge with the external expression of your outfit. In order to get it right, ask yourself, what do you stand for?
Start your personal style book with pictures from magazines or pictures on Instagram to collate your favorite looks. Add your best fashion moments on the days when you feel great about what you’re wearing or when you receive compliments of “Oh, that looks fabulous on you!”
Don’t do this on a day that you have to make a critical presentation. Try experimental wardrobe choices on a “safe” day. Don’t worry, the fashion police won’t send you to jail. It’s okay to make mistakes.
Just trust your instincts.
Ask for Feedback
Asking for feedback is one of the quickest ways to learn if you are actually getting it right.
If you’re afraid that you can’t handle the candid feedback, suggest that your colleagues/friends share their thoughts, especially the not-so-positive ones, on the following day once you’ve gotten out of the outfit! This makes it easier for you to look them in the eye and thank them for their frank report.
Have fun exploring, and if you’d prefer a systematic way of getting it right and saving money and time, work with a certified consultant of the Universal Style!
